Oscar De La Hoya Trolls Edgar Berlanga For Losing Focus Before Canelo Fight

Oscar De La Hoya Trolls Edgar Berlanga For Losing Focus Before Canelo Fight

Berlanga Breaks 20-Fight KO Streak

After headlining the undercard for Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin III earlier this month, Edgar Berlanga came up short in his first career main event.

In the co-feature of a Top Rank Boxing on ESPN card, Berlanga lost a unanimous decision to Steve Rolls and in the process, snapped his impressive knockout streak at 20.

De La Hoya Trolls Berlanga

Reacting to Berlanga’s recent loss, boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya mocked the young fighter on Twitter.

“I guess it’s true. You can’t focus on selling wolf tickets and not focus on your opponent,” De La Hoya wrote.

Berlanga Focused on Canelo, Not Rolls

Prior to the fight, Berlanga admitted that he was looking past Rolls and had his sights set on a potential clash with Canelo Alvarez next.

“Without a doubt, Canelo is still a priority,” Berlanga said through an interpreter. “My eyes are on him. Saturday night, I have to get the victory, look spectacular and then, after that, we’ll see what happens.”

De La Hoya: Berlanga Lost Focus

However, De La Hoya believes that Berlanga’s focus on Canelo cost him against Rolls.

"When you deviate from the script and start saying and thinking about fighting Canelo and this, that and the other, guess what? You lost focus and now you’re paying the price,” De La Hoya said.

Berlanga’s Future

Despite the loss, Berlanga is still a promising prospect with a bright future ahead of him.

The 25-year-old is still only 20-1 and has plenty of time to develop and improve.

Berlanga Needs to Learn from His Mistakes

However, Berlanga needs to learn from his mistakes and avoid looking past his opponents in the future.

If he can do that, he has the potential to become a world champion.
